On November 28th, the product of Destiny Davis' mind will come to fruition! Join us for an art exhibition featuring local artists at Loring Bar & Restaurant and explore the redefinition of what it means to be a multifaceted and sexual Black body.

Taking back power in the minds, body and souls of ourselves with efforts to combat and deconstruct the oversexualization & censoring that the Black bodies have endured. A construct meant to demean and degrade us leaving us to unravel a self hate of our natural self. In this moment we will bask in our truth and all its glory.

Minneapolis has a long history of distinctive R&B styles and flavors. Astralblak arrived in 2014 and began to expand on that with an eye on the future but with respect to the past: “I see it as the next chapter of the Minneapolis sound” says guitarist ∆RT P∆RTÉ. One of their first shows was playing a Clash tribute; months later landing on First Avenue's Best New Bands 2014. After bursting onto the scene the band took a hiatus and gathered to build collectively and contribute to the new vanguard of black music.

Astralblak is made up of five musicians/producers: MMYYKK, Proper T, Greg Grease, DJ Just Nine & ∆RT P∆RTÉ armed with various synths, drum machines, and instruments set out to bring a new, exploratory modern sound influenced by the greats of funk, soul, and jazz with electronic excursions, hard grooves, Afro-futurism and soulful melodies. Astralblak explores the psyche and searching for Black Excellence: “Astralblak is church, it's therapy, it's family, It's a space where we can express ourselves freely as black men with no limitations”, states multi-instrumentalist/vocalist MMYYKK. The band works in communal fashion and continually seeks a greater a truth. The band see the groups mission as part of a bigger movement “we see Astralblak as a vessel, a spiritual, sonic culmination of our experiences and influences from our ancestors”.

Of their enthusiastic live shows the Walker Art Center says of Astralblak “Fela Kuti jams with Parliament and smokes with the Art Ensemble of Chicago”. Astralblak has shared stages with innovators Thundercat, Shabazz Palaces, Tinariwen , Femi Kuti and Dam-Funk.

The brunch will celebrate exceptional people who encourage and empower women while striving to change society’s definition of "beauty" for women. We will honor individuals and organizations who have worked to foster beauty by improving self-esteem, reducing health disparities among women of color, promoting self-awareness, and motivating “Every Woman to be Totally Beautiful”. The Ambassadors of Beauty Brunch is sure to uplift and inspire all who attend!

Following the brunch, join us in the exhibit area from 12:00 – 6:00 PM for:

A diverse exposition of top health and beauty brands

Educational workshops and demonstrations led by leaders from an array of health and beauty industries

Free health screenings

A kid’s corner

And more!

It is our desire that attendees will leave The Shades Of Beauty Expo inspired to embrace their unique beauty and equipped to take control of their health. We want to empower Every Woman to be Totally Beautiful.

Black Poets: On Creating a Blackmosphere

In the spirit of Juneteenth, emancipation and creating a free landscape, join us for a poetry reading and conversation with Keno Evol and Lisa Marie Brimmer. Evol and Brimmer will present new work and discuss what it means to be in community – holding, creating and critiquing artistic spaces and society so all black life can thrive. Conjure other worlds through black art and cultivate volume in black life.

Collaborator: Black Table Arts. Funded by Minnesota's Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.
