Letters from a Carefree Black Girl

Wow, we finally made it to 2019! I’m not gonna lie, I was kind of dreading 2019 for a really long time. 2018 was pretty hard on me and I wasn’t ready for the possibility of more pain. This was such a crazy mindset for me to have and I’m so happy I snapped out of by time the 31st came around. I’ll probably always be the type of person to look forward to the New Year or a “reset” if you will. I’m no naive girl and I know there’s always room for improvement when it comes to Maya. That, and I get bored very easily, hence my 13th dye job in about 3 months!

I’m always looking to improve my life and mindset in someway and the New Year makes it even easier because it makes me feel like I’m not alone in my journey. There are billions of other people trying to better their lives, some even with similar goals, at the same exact time as me. Whether I know them or not, we’re all on a journey simply trying to be better than we were the day before. That leads me to ask: is this “New Year, New Me” mindset really a good thing or is it detrimental?

I know I’m not the only one who sees all the resent-filled posts talking shit about all the people who claim the new year will bring a brand new them. I do get it. It’s hard to not get annoyed when the same person keeps claiming that as soon as it hits midnight they’ll be a whole new person, yet every single year they’re still the same bum ass person from 2015. But you also have to wonder, how can someone actually get mad because someone wants to improve their life? I feel like you have to be a pretty miserable person to really get upset about some shit like that, but that’s just me.

I’m sure it’s no surprise that I have a slew of goals I’d like to accomplish by the end of 2019 and it’s even more obvious that my oversharing ass is gonna let y’all know exactly what they are in just a moment. Let’s hold one another accountable this year. Find a friend, one of the many helpful therapists from BetterHelp, or even myself and check in every month to see where you are with your goals. New Years Resolutions shouldn’t be taunting and it’s nothing to be embarrassed about, everyone has something to work on. I found that it’s easier to break your goals up by month, making it more attainable & less taunting to look at.

2019 Goals- January

  • Set content calendar for the month

  • Start financial literacy journey

  • Take a writing class

  • Stop drinking soda

  • Stop giving toxic people my energy & attention

  • Finish a book

  • Creative direct 3 photo shoots

  • Meditate everyday

  • Practice patience

  • Love more

What are your goals? Speak them into existence, write them down and fight to accomplish them every single day. You’re only hurting yourself by not living up to your potential. You have an entire month to spark some change within your life, let’s make it count.

With love,

A Carefree Black Girl
