Ravyn Lenae has been a favorite of Culture Piece's ever since we first seen her open for Noname last year at First Avenue. When I first heard that Lenae's EP would be produced by Steve Lacy, I knew that it'd be something special! If you've heard any of his work with top musicians such as Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator and The Internet, then you'd know exactly what I'm talking about. Not only did Lacy produce, he was also featured on a couple of the songs including my favorite, 4 Leaf Clover.
At first listen, I could tell that Lenae was headed in a different direction compared to past bodies of work. Steve and Ravyn seem to be the perfect duo creating catchy, funk filled singles. Her vocal range paired with these funky neo-soul beats are nothing short of mesmerizing. Each of Ravyn's songs is actually the story of a character she's created in her mind. Although we're still waiting to hear Ravyn's personal story, these characters are doing a damn good job of making us feel like she's our best friend!
Ravyn told The Fader, "The melodies are different, just my approach to certain topics are more blunt, and that's a matter of the sound that's changed, and also me being older. I don't have to hide certain things anymore in my music. I'm feeling a little more confident in who I am and my experiences."
At only 19 years old, this Chicago gal is already in the right direction according to Culture Piece! Don't expect to forget about this beauty anytime soon!
