It seems like the 2016-17 comeback for Black tv didn’t end when the year had. 2018 welcomes so much more in the name of Black entertainment and art. Starting with the series premiere of the Freeform spinoff of Black-ish: Grown-ish. Not gonna lie- I definitely support Black-ish and everything it stands for BUT I never got too interested in it, so I wasn’t sure if Grown-ish would follow suit. Thankfully, I was wrong! With only 3 episodes under its belt so far, Grown-ish is already setting records giving Freeform its biggest launch for a comedy series since 2012!

The series follows Zoey Johnson, played by Yara Shahidi, as she heads to college. What I really like about this show is that its not afraid to be real. There’s (RELATABLE) drama within relationships, friendships, and even the classes. I don’t want to reveal too much for those who haven’t had the chance to tune in yet, but just know that drugs make a few appearances. Want to know what else I love about Grown-ish? I have yet to see a “white savior” in this show. You know, the white character they put in EVERY Black show/movie, who just so happens to save all the Black folks from slavery/school/whatever problem they’re facing (think The Help, Django, shit any movie really).

I have such high hopes for this show and with or without my support I know that Grown-ish would thrive. As I mentioned, I don’t want to spoil anything so hurry up and catch up so I can really debrief this refreshing and seemingly revolutionary series!
