Self Care and its Necessities for a Carefree Black Girl”

 

When thinking of the relaunch of “Letters from a Carefree Black Girl”, I decided that maybe this column was created to give me the voice I've been wanting you all to hear. This column will be an extension of myself to better myself and hopefully, to inspire you to better yourself as well. Oh, and let’s not forget, I’ll also just be spewing out the thoughts I’ve been having at 6am on a Sunday morning (like right now). Throughout the growth of CBG, you will be challenged to open yourselves to new ways of thinking and living.

I've went on a walk, meditated, done yoga, & listened to 2 podcasts all before 9am. I've given myself the challenge of practicing “self care” in various forms every day. If you've been on social media the past 6 months to a year, you'll know all about the “self care movement”. Women (and men) throwing a selfie in a face mask, bath tub, etc. with hashtags #selfcare and #selflove on Instagram.

Self care is so much deeper than that though. This month, I challenge myself and all of you to practice self care in its deeper forms everyday. Not only can self care essentially make you healthier, clear your skin, and get you GLOWING- it helps with your mental health, which is most important of all.

Not to get too personal too fast, but if you know me, you’ll know that my career is fucking thriving! Like honestly, it couldn't be better. I’m so sad to say, that it's not the same case for my mental health. I’ve been challenged by a close friend to find the root of everything. Why I am the way I am. Easier said than done, but I’ve been working on this for a couple months and to tell you the truth, it’s been the biggest form of self care I could have ever practiced. Not only have I found improvement within myself,  I’ve improved the way I interact with people. It's honestly been such a beautiful and raw experience.

Anyways, before I get into too much of a rant, I’ll sign off and leave you with this: explore yourself. Get to know yourself all over again and if you notice things that you don't necessarily like about yourself, change it. Life is too damn short to not be loving yourself. We all deserve to be carefree. In the meantime, I've created a small list of ways we can practice self care. I challenge you to cross at least two off your list this week!

Self Care Methods:

  1. Start journaling nightly- I know this can be tedious but trust me, it helps get out all your thoughts! The healthy and the unhealthy need to be released!
  2. Meditation.
  3. Candlelight Yoga- Everyone says this, but trust me, you don't have to be flexible to enjoy yoga!
  4. Sit in solitude.
  5. Sex!
  6. More meditation!
  7. Listen to a podcast.
  8. Visit an art gallery.
  9. Visit a therapist- We all need a therapist! Don't listen to the people who try to deem you crazy for having one!
  10. Go out with ya girls!
  11. Try acupuncture- I've had a deep fear of acupuncture for awhile now, but I'm making my appointment. Article coming soon on that!
  12. Cleanse yourself and your home- Get some sage & start smudging!
  13. Stop giving your attention to people who don't better you in some way.
